01 — Overview

The backyard arrived as a collection of disconnected pieces: an aging pool ringed by river rock, elevated wood decks that had weathered past their life, stairs that did not line up with how the house was actually used, and very little usable outdoor living space. The renovation treated the whole yard as a single problem rather than a series of repairs, rebuilding the circulation between the house, the deck level, and the pool level so that every part of the yard connects.

Design Approach

The elevated deck system was expanded and rebuilt with steel cable railing, and a large A-frame gabled patio cover with exposed timber framing and a tongue-and-groove ceiling now anchors the covered living area. Custom stairs tie the deck level down to the pool. At pool level, light-colored pavers and dark contrasting coping reset the palette, the raised spa was remodeled with stone veneer, and an elevated seating terrace was built at the rear of the pool with stone veneer, integrated stairs, privacy screening, and waterfall features spilling back into the water. A tensioned shade sail covers the pool without closing the yard in.
