We confirm which city you are actually in before anything is drawn, walk the property with you, and shoot levels. On a wooded Memorial lot that walk is mostly about the trees: what is protected, where the root zones run, and what that leaves us.

Tree Survey and Disposition
Where the jurisdiction requires it — Piney Point wants a tree disposition plan signed by a degreed forester, and Hunters Creek requires a current tree survey for construction-driven removal — we arrange it as part of the project rather than handing you a form.

Design and Drainage
Layout, materials and planting are drawn together with the grading and the drainage, because on Memorial clay under a closed canopy those are the same problem. Bunker Hill lots under 25,000 square feet carry a detention requirement calculated at 45% of lot coverage, so hardscape area gets resolved here, not on site.

Build
Excavation, base, structures, planting and systems in the order that does not require redoing work. Tree protection fencing goes up before machines arrive and stays up.

Ranch, Mid-Century and the Rebuild in Between
Memorial’s original stock is 1950s and 1960s ranch and traditional on lots that would be considered enormous anywhere inside the Loop, and Memorial Bend holds one of the largest collections of mid-century modern houses in Houston. Those houses were designed to sit low and long under the canopy, and a landscape that fights that line always looks bolted on.
The other half of the market is the rebuild — an older house bought for its land and replaced with something considerably larger. That changes the problem completely: less open ground, more roof, more drive, and a canopy that now has construction inside its root zone. We design differently for the two, and we say which one we think you have on the first walk.

Memorial Landscape Design FAQs
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Memorial?
It depends entirely on which city you are in, and 77024 contains five. In Piney Point Village any live tree three inches or more in diameter needs a removal permit, and the city has an urban forester on staff. Hunters Creek Village requires a current tree survey and a disposition plan for construction-driven removal, charges a $500-per-tree exemption fee, and bars further removals for similar improvements for five years afterwards. In the City of Houston portions there is no permit for a tree in the interior of your own lot — only for trees in the setback or right-of-way. We confirm your jurisdiction before we design.
Why does grass keep dying in my Memorial back yard?
Almost always canopy, not care. Mature live oaks and pines over a Memorial lot cut light below what St. Augustine needs to hold, and every reseeding thins out the same way. The honest options are shade-tolerant planting and expanded beds, artificial turf where you need usable open ground, or hardscape. We will tell you which parts of a yard can carry natural turf and which cannot rather than selling you the same sod twice.
How much does a landscape project in Memorial cost?
The range on our cost guide holds here, but Memorial carries two cost drivers most Houston lots do not: tree protection and jurisdiction. A forester-signed disposition plan, protection fencing across a large wooded lot, and detention where a Village drainage ordinance requires it are all real line items. You get them itemised in the proposal, before anything starts.
Can you build a pool or patio near a protected oak?
Often yes, but the tree decides the footprint. Piney Point caps impervious cover at 25% of a protected tree’s critical root zone and limits cut or fill to two inches across more than half of it. That is a design constraint we work to from the first sketch, not something discovered at inspection. Sometimes the answer is to move the terrace eight feet; sometimes it is to change the level.
Does Memorial flooding affect landscape design here?
On the Buffalo Bayou side of Memorial, yes. Buffalo Bayou runs along the southern edge of the area and much of it here is still in a natural, wooded state, which is part of why the corridor is attractive and part of why it floods. During Harvey the bayou corridor took both record rainfall and controlled releases from Addicks and Barker upstream. On bayou-adjacent lots we design grading, drainage and planting for water that will arrive, and we say plainly where we would not put a fixed structure.
Do you work in Hunters Creek, Piney Point and Bunker Hill as well as Memorial?
Yes. All of the Memorial Villages are inside our service area, along with Hedwig Village and Hilshire Village. Each has its own building official and its own permit set, and Bunker Hill in particular runs a detention calculation on lots under 25,000 square feet that affects how much hardscape a design can carry. We handle those submittals as part of the project.
