Site Walk and Levels
We walk the terrace area with you, shoot levels across it, and find where water currently goes in a downpour. Sun angles, door thresholds, and the sightlines from inside the house all get recorded, because those decide the paving module and the orientation before any material is chosen. The consultation is free and produces an investment range on the spot.

Material and Pattern Selection
Concrete pavers, travertine, flagstone, natural stone, or poured and finished concrete are specified against the house and the traffic the terrace will take. Joint lines, module size, and orientation are set out on the drawing so the cuts land where they were intended rather than wherever the run finishes.

Excavation, Base and Drainage
We excavate to the depth the clay and the load require and build a compacted aggregate base in lifts. Falls are set across the surface, and channel drains or a French drain line are tied in where the water needs somewhere to go rather than somewhere to sit.

Laying, Edges and Level Changes
Paving is laid to the drawn pattern with the borders, soldier courses, and coping set as part of the field rather than trimmed in afterwards. Seat walls, planters, and steps are built and faced in the same palette so grade changes read as part of the terrace.

Clean-Down and Walkthrough
The terrace is washed down, joints are filled and compacted, and the transitions into turf, beds, and existing slabs are finished by hand. We walk it with you, explain how to keep the surface, and hand over the manufacturer documentation registered in your name.

What moves the price of a paver patio up or down?
Most patio projects we build run $12,000 to $45,000, which works out to roughly $20 to $40 per square foot installed. The lower end is a straightforward paver terrace on level ground with a simple border. The upper end is a large travertine or natural stone terrace with seat walls, steps, drainage, and integrated lighting. Square footage, material, how much grading and drainage the site needs, and equipment access are what move the figure.
Why do patios in Houston settle and go uneven?
Almost always because the base was too thin for the clay underneath it. Beaumont clay swells when it takes on water and shrinks when it dries, and a paving surface laid on a shallow base moves with it. A base excavated to depth and compacted in lifts, with drainage taken away from the terrace, is what stops that cycle reaching the surface.
Paver, travertine, or poured concrete: which is right?
Pavers are the most forgiving for movement because individual units can be lifted and reset. Travertine stays noticeably cooler underfoot in full sun, which is why it dominates around pools and on west-facing terraces. Poured concrete gives the largest uninterrupted surface and the lowest cost per square foot, but it cracks where it is told to rather than never. We specify against sun exposure, pool proximity, and how the terrace connects to the house.
Do I need a permit for a patio in Houston?
A ground-level patio usually does not, but anything with a roof, a structure, or work in an easement generally does, and city and village jurisdictions differ. We check the requirement for your address as part of design and handle the submittal where one is needed.
How long does a patio installation take?
A modest paver terrace is typically a week on site. A larger stone terrace with drainage, seat walls, and steps runs two to four weeks. You get a schedule with the proposal, before anything starts.
