Flagstone Patio Installation Built for Houston Clay
Flagstone suits yards where a straight-edged patio would look imposed: courtyards, side gardens, and the ground under mature trees. Every piece is fitted individually, so the jointing and the shuffling are most of the craft.
What’s included in the work.
Every project has the same core scope, adapted to the specific property and program.
- 01
Stone Selection
Colour, thickness, and size range chosen against the house and the existing paving before anything is delivered.
- 02
Base & Setting Bed
Excavation and a compacted base with a screeded setting bed, or a mortar bed where the terrace carries furniture and daily traffic.
- 03
Fitting & Cutting
Each piece dry-laid, shuffled, and cut so the joints stay tight and consistent across the whole field.
- 04
Jointing
Joints filled with sand, decomposed granite, or mortar, or planted with a low ground cover, depending on how the terrace should read.
- 05
Grade & Drainage
Falls set away from the house and across the terrace so water leaves rather than standing in the joints.
- 06
Steps & Borders
Flagstone treads, boulder steps, and stone borders tying the terrace into lawn, beds, and walkways.

Everything you see.
Everything you don’t.
What separates a landscape that lasts from one that fails in two summers is the work you never see — grade, drainage, soil preparation, and compacted base. On Houston clay, that is most of the job.
And what you do see — the joint lines, the bed edges, the level of a terrace against the house — we hold to the same standard.
Roughly what it costs.
The range below is what work of this kind typically runs in Houston, so you can place yourself in it before you call. It is a starting point, not a quote — every project is scoped to the specific property, program, and material selections.
We confirm a clear investment range in the initial consultation and issue a detailed proposal after the design phase.
- Square footage, and whether the stone is dry-laid or set in mortar
- Stone selection — thickness, colour, and the size range chosen
- How much cutting and shuffling the fitting takes to keep joints tight
- Jointing — sand, decomposed granite, mortar, or planted ground cover
- Steps, boulders, and borders across changes in level
$9,000 – $35,000
Most projects of this type
- At the lower end
- A courtyard or garden terrace dry-laid on a compacted base, with sand or decomposed granite joints.
- At the upper end
- A large mortared terrace over a slab with cut borders, boulder steps, and planted joints, every piece fitted individually.
A range, not a quote. Your figure depends on square footage, materials, how much grading and drainage the site needs, and equipment access.

Work that goes with this.
Most projects combine several of these, and doing them together costs less than doing them one at a time.
