Why do flagstone patio quotes vary so much?
Most flagstone terraces run $9,000 to $35,000, or roughly $25 to $45 per square foot installed. Mortar-set costs more than dry-laid, thicker stone costs more than thin, and the amount of cutting a tight-jointed layout needs is the single biggest labour variable.
Dry-laid or mortared flagstone?
Dry-laid on a compacted base drains through, tolerates ground movement, and can be lifted and reset. Mortar-set on a slab is flatter, holds furniture better, and does not grow weeds in the joints, but it needs a stable slab beneath it and it cracks if the slab moves. Courtyards and garden paths usually want dry-laid; a dining terrace off the house usually wants mortared.
Will flagstone work under my oak tree?
Usually, and better than most alternatives. A dry-laid flagstone terrace can be built on a shallow profile with hand excavation, so the root plate is not cut the way a full paver base would cut it. We assess the tree first and keep the build inside the critical root zone guidance.
Do flagstone joints grow weeds?
Sand and decomposed granite joints will, unless they are polymeric or planted deliberately with a low ground cover. Mortared joints do not. It is a maintenance trade-off against drainage and flexibility, and it is worth deciding at design rather than discovering in year two.
How long does a flagstone patio take to install?
Typically one to three weeks depending on square footage and how much cutting the layout needs. Flagstone is slower than pavers because every piece is individually fitted. You get a schedule with the proposal.
