Why do retaining walls lean or fail?
Water, almost every time. Saturated clay behind a wall exerts hydrostatic pressure that no block face is designed to resist on its own. A wall built with free-draining backfill, filter fabric, and a pipe taken to daylight relieves that pressure; a wall backfilled with the clay that came out of the excavation does not.
Do I need engineering for a retaining wall?
Generally once the retained height passes about four feet, though it varies by jurisdiction and by what sits above the wall. We check the requirement for your address and handle the engineering and permitting where it applies.
Block, poured concrete, or natural stone?
Segmental block is the most economical and handles curves well. Poured concrete gives the cleanest face and is usually the choice where a wall is being veneered anyway. Natural stone reads best in a garden setting but is the slowest to build. Retained height and what the wall sits next to decide it more than preference does.
Can a retaining wall fix my drainage problem?
It can be part of the answer, but a wall is a routing decision, not a soakaway. If standing water is the actual complaint, the grading and drain design come first and the wall is built into that plan rather than expected to solve it.
