Koch Project: Swim Spa and Trex Deck in Spring
An all-season retreat built around a recessed swim spa — an engineered concrete vault and sump beneath a Trex deck, a structural patio cover, a U-shaped kitchen, a double-sided fireplace and a full French drain network.
This backyard has been reborn as an all-season retreat. At its center sits a Trex deck that surrounds the recessed swim-spa, which is covered by a sleek pergola with a Hercules louvered roof. Nestling the spa below grade meant pouring a fully engineered concrete vault, tucking a sump basin and pump beneath the shell, and crane-setting the unit into position. This is not something any landscaping company can tackle, however, our team at Texan Landscape Group executed it without any hiccups.
Privacy comes from towering 100-gallon Eagleston hollies, each uplit at night to frame the space in a soft glow. Underfoot, 3×3 cast-stone pavers run in clean rows, their joints filled with artificial turf for a low-maintenance, permeable surface that stays cool even in August.
The patio cover is a showpiece on its own. Complex hips, valleys, and a handcrafted faux beam create architectural diversity, while dual skylights pull natural light deep into the structure. Motorized screens drop on all sides, pairing with insulated rafters and triple ceiling fans to knock down Houston’s heat and glare at the touch of a button.
Just inside the cover, a U-shaped outdoor kitchen makes entertaining effortless. The custom granite countertops tie into a double sink and wine fridge, and a lineup of Coyote appliances, grill, side burners, vent hood, and a Big Green Egg. This homeowner can handle everything from burgers to brisket. A double-sided fireplace anchors the opposite wall, warming both the lounge and the interior living room beyond its see-through firebox.
Beneath the landscape, we installed a fully integrated French drain network that directs all runoff from the new roof and hardscape out to the street. This will provide long-term protection to the foundations and finishes.
