Overhill Project: Lattice Pergola and Privacy Screen in Garden Oaks
Shade and privacy for a patio that reflected too much sun — a channel lattice aluminum pergola with a bronze Hercules top, a privacy screen, a ceiling fan and a mounted TV, with the daylight indoors kept intact.
This backyard renovation in Houston, Texas, was designed to provide the homeowners with much-needed shade and privacy while maintaining natural light in their main living area. The original patio reflected so much sunlight that it felt overwhelming, especially after time spent at the pool. Our goal was to create a structure that offered relief from the sun without blocking views or darkening the interior of the home.
We designed and built a channel lattice pergola with bronze Hercules panels, spaced every eight inches to filter UV rays while still allowing sunlight to pass through. The result is a comfortable shaded retreat that feels 10–15° cooler while preserving brightness indoors. To enhance comfort and usability, we installed a ceiling fan with a dedicated switch, as well as a lattice privacy screen along the back. This not only blocks views of the nearby commercial building but also created the perfect place to mount a TV, turning the patio into a functional entertainment space.
