Is a louvered roof worth it over a fixed pergola?
If the space is meant to be usable in changing weather, yes. A fixed pergola gives you whatever shade the slats give you at that hour. Louvers let you open the roof for a spring evening and close it against an afternoon storm, which is most of the year in Houston.
Does aluminum get too hot to sit under?
The frame does warm in direct sun, but the covered area beneath a closed louvered roof sits materially cooler than open sky, and no heat is radiated down the way an uninsulated metal patio cover radiates it. For maximum temperature drop, an insulated roof panel is the better answer.
Does an aluminum pergola need any maintenance?
Washing, and that is close to it. There is no sanding, no staining, and no repainting, which is the reason most Houston clients choose it over cedar. Louvered mechanisms should be operated regularly and inspected as part of a normal service check.
