The question that actually determines how long the court lasts and how well it plays is the one underneath: what the base is made of and how it was built to handle Houston's clay soil.
Why sport courts are especially unforgiving of a bad base
Unlike a patio or driveway, a sport court's surface has to stay perfectly flat and consistent for the ball to bounce true and for players to trust their footing at speed. Even a small amount of settling or heaving, the kind a patio might absorb without anyone noticing, shows up immediately on a sport court as an inconsistent bounce or a seam a player can feel underfoot. Houston's expansive clay soil moves seasonally more than almost any other soil type in the country, which means a sport court base built the way it would be built in a stable-soil region will develop exactly the kind of unevenness that ruins the playing experience within just a few years.
What the base actually needs to be
A properly built sport court starts with excavation down to stable subgrade, typically eight to twelve inches depending on existing soil conditions, followed by a compacted base of crushed aggregate laid and compacted in stages rather than all at once. This is the same principle that governs a good paver driveway base, but the tolerance for error is tighter, since a sport court surface has essentially no forgiveness for an uneven base the way a paver joint can absorb minor irregularity.
On top of the compacted aggregate base, most modern residential sport courts use either a post-tensioned or fiber-reinforced concrete slab, engineered specifically to resist the cracking that comes from clay soil movement, or an asphalt base designed with similar reinforcement principles. A slab poured without engineering for this soil type, using a standard flatwork concrete approach rather than a sport-court-specific design, is one of the most common reasons we see cracked backyard courts within just a handful of years of installation.
Drainage: the part that gets skipped most often
A sport court needs positive drainage built into the slope of the base and finished surface, generally a very slight, carefully calculated grade that moves water off the court without being perceptible to a player during use. Standing water on a sport court is both a safety hazard and, over time, a driver of the same clay saturation and movement that damages the base beneath it. Courts built without this drainage consideration commonly develop puddling in low spots that both interrupts play and accelerates long-term surface damage.
Surfacing systems and what they add on top of the slab
Once the structural slab is in place, most residential courts get a cushioned acrylic sport surface system, which is a multi-layer coating applied over the concrete that adds shock absorption, consistent traction, and the color and line striping specific to whichever sports the court is built for. This surfacing system is what most homeowners picture when they think of a sport court, but it is entirely dependent on the slab underneath being flat, properly cured, and free of the cracking that comes from an inadequate base. No surfacing system can fix a structurally compromised slab; it can only sit on top of whatever problems already exist there.
Multi-sport courts and what that actually requires
Many Houston homeowners want a court that works for both pickleball and basketball, sometimes with additional striping for other sports. This is achievable on a single properly sized slab with multiple striping overlays in contrasting colors, but it does require thinking through court orientation and total footprint early, since pickleball and basketball have different dimensional and clearance requirements, and retrofitting additional striping after the fact is far easier than trying to expand a court's physical footprint once the slab is poured.
Fencing and lighting considerations
