What’s Under a Putting Green (and Why It Matters)

The base, infill, and drainage under a synthetic putting green decide how true it rolls. Here is what goes in below the surface, layer by layer.

A synthetic putting green is judged by one thing: how the ball rolls. And roll is decided almost entirely by what is underneath. The turf on top is the last layer installed and the least consequential — two greens with identical surfaces can putt completely differently depending on the work below them.

Since none of that is visible when the job is finished, it is worth knowing what should be there.

Excavation and subgrade

Construction starts by digging out. Topsoil and organic material have to come off, because both continue to decompose and compress after they are buried, and every mysterious low spot that appears in a green three years later is a subgrade that was never dealt with.

Depth depends on the site, and on Houston clay the subgrade also has to be proof-rolled and shaped so water is moving in a chosen direction before anything is built on it. Tree roots crossing the area are a decision point rather than an obstacle: cutting significant roots to make a green fit is a trade against the tree, and usually the green should move instead.

The base, and what “flat” has to mean

Above the subgrade goes crushed aggregate, installed in lifts and compacted as it goes, then screeded to the intended contours. This layer is the green.

Tolerances here are tighter than in any other kind of hardscape. A quarter-inch dip in a patio is invisible and irrelevant. The same dip in a putting surface pulls a putt off line, and the golfer will find it within ten minutes and never stop noticing it. Screeding by eye is not sufficient; the surface is worked to string lines and checked, and the compaction has to be uniform or the flatness will not survive the first wet season.

Drainage in a clay yard

This is the Houston-specific part, and it is where a green built to a generic specification gets into trouble.

A green needs a designed path for water. The base is permeable, so rain passes through the turf and into the aggregate quickly — but on clay that drains slowly, water arriving at the bottom of that base has to go somewhere. Depending on the site that means fall built into the subgrade, perimeter drainage, or a connection into the wider drainage system of the yard.

A green that holds water plays slow, grows algae in the fringe, and smells after a storm. Everything else can be built perfectly and this one omission will define the result.

Infill: speed, roll, and firmness

Infill is the granular material brushed down into the turf fibres, and it does two jobs. It supports the blades so they stand upright rather than lying over, and it sets the speed of the surface.

More infill, well brushed in, generally gives a firmer, faster, truer roll. Too little and the ball wobbles as the fibres flatten unevenly. The right amount depends on the turf being used and on how fast you want the green, which is a conversation worth having before installation rather than after — it is far easier to specify a speed than to change one.

Infill also needs topping up over the years as it settles and migrates. That, plus brushing, is essentially the whole maintenance programme.

Contours, and reading the break

Breaks are shaped into the base, not laid on afterwards. A green that is genuinely interesting to putt has contours that read consistently from every approach, which means they are designed as surfaces rather than as bumps.

There is a practical limit. Slope that makes a green fun also makes it hard to hold a ball, and in a backyard where the same green is used by a scratch golfer and a seven-year-old, gentler is usually better. Cup placement matters as much as slope: several cups at different distances and angles turn a small green into a varied one.

Fringe, edging, and where greens come apart

Edges are where synthetic greens fail first. The fringe collar — longer turf around the putting surface — has to be seamed and anchored so it does not lift, and the perimeter needs an edge detail that holds the turf and the infill in place against a paver, a bed, or a lawn.

Chipping areas, bunkers, and fringe collars all change how much use a green gets, because they turn a putting surface into a short-game area. If that is the intention, it belongs in the design from the start, since the base and drainage extend under all of it.

Size, and how many holes actually fit

The question behind most putting green enquiries is how many holes will fit, and the honest answer is that hole count matters less than putt length. A green with four cups but no putt longer than eight feet gets dull quickly; one with two cups and a genuine twenty-foot putt across a break stays interesting for years.

What raises the ceiling is fringe and approach room. A green squeezed hard against a fence on three sides only allows putts from one direction, and space around the perimeter — even a couple of feet of fringe — is what makes the same square footage play as several different putts.

The other question worth settling early is whether you want to chip onto it. Chipping needs a landing area with enough give to hold a ball, an approach long enough to swing on, and a sensible thought about what is behind the green — a window, in particular.

Where a green should not go

  • Directly under a large tree: leaf and berry drop lands on it constantly, and roots will move the base.
  • At the lowest point of the yard, unless drainage there has already been solved.
  • Hard against a boundary on multiple sides, which removes most of the possible putts.
  • Where a ball leaving the green reaches glass, a pool, or a neighbour’s property.
  • Across a route people and machinery already use to get to the rest of the yard.

What a synthetic green still asks of you

A synthetic green is low maintenance in the way a good patio is low maintenance: nothing weekly, but not nothing at all.

Leaves and debris need blowing off before they mat down and hold moisture. High-traffic lines — the walk to the cup, the spot everyone putts from — benefit from brushing against the nap to keep the fibres standing. Infill migrates slightly over years and occasionally needs topping and re-levelling, particularly on slopes. Cups collect grit and want emptying.

Do that a few times a year and the green plays the same in its tenth season as its first. Skip it and the surface slows unevenly, which shows up as putts that break in ways the contours do not explain.

What to ask before it is built

  1. How deep is the excavation, and what is being removed?
  2. What is the base material, and in how many compacted lifts?
  3. Where does water go once it passes through the base?
  4. What green speed is being targeted, and what infill achieves it?
  5. How are the contours set and checked for flatness?
  6. How is the perimeter edged and the fringe anchored?
