01 — Overview

This project in Houston’s Oak Forest neighborhood was designed around one simple goal, which was to create a beautiful backyard that requires almost no maintenance while still feeling warm and inviting.

Design Approach

To start, we installed roughly 1,500 square feet of premium artificial turf, instantly eliminating mud, patchy grass, and constant upkeep. The turf creates a clean, usable lawn that will eventually accommodate a play set and give the homeowners a durable space for family activities without the headaches of traditional grass.

Around the perimeter, we introduced a native xeriscape planting palette chosen for both texture and resilience. Two multi-trunk olive trees anchor the landscape and add a subtle Mediterranean character to the space.

The hardscape was designed to complement the yard’s natural tones. We installed a custom patio using pearl white cast stone pavers in multiple sizes, which create a modern pattern that visually ties the entire outdoor area together.

The standout feature of the backyard is the custom masonry fireplace. Built at approximately 12 feet long and 8 feet tall, the structure includes a large firebox and integrated wood storage cubbies on either side. Above the fireplace, we incorporated an elevated planter with a drip irrigation system. Over time, rosemary vines will cascade down the structure, adding greenery, fragrance, and a unique living element to the design.

To complete the atmosphere, we installed over 20 landscape lighting fixtures, including puck lights, wash lights, and uplights throughout the yard. At night, the lighting highlights the fireplace, plants, and patio, creating a comfortable outdoor environment that can be enjoyed long after the sun goes down.
