Westridge Project: Outdoor Kitchen and Motorized Shade in Bellaire
A cooler, more private, lower-maintenance backyard — a custom outdoor kitchen, a patio with motorized shade, concrete steppers set into gravel and a full privacy hedge.
This project is a great example of how thoughtful design and skilled craftsmanship can completely reshape an urban outdoor space. The homeowners wanted a backyard that felt cooler, more private, and easier to maintain.
For this backyard renovation project, shade and privacy were top priorities. We preserved and carefully trimmed the existing oak tree, then added large, mature Eagleston Hollies to establish a lush canopy quickly. A new 8-foot privacy fence now wraps the property, replacing the shorter fence that previously left the yard feeling exposed. To enhance the atmosphere after sunset, we installed low-voltage landscape lighting throughout the backyard, adding depth, dimension, and nighttime usability.
Furthermore, we created a dedicated grilling and utility area to house additional charcoal and specialty grills that didn’t belong in the main kitchen. A custom privacy wall was built to conceal a large generator, featuring unique architectural joinery inspired by Asian design elements. Jasmine vines were planted to climb the structure, adding greenery and visual interest over time.
Lastly, we upgraded the existing concrete pad with a light colored travertine, instantly brightening the area and tying it into the rest of the hardscape. Finally, we replaced a basic standalone grill with a fully built outdoor kitchen.
