What moves the price of an outdoor tile terrace up or down?
Most tile terraces run $12,000 to $45,000, or roughly $30 to $55 per square foot installed. Whether the slab is new or existing is the largest single variable, followed by the tile itself and how much membrane the assembly needs.
Can I tile over my existing concrete patio?
Sometimes. The slab has to be sound, draining correctly, and stable enough that an uncoupling membrane can absorb what movement remains. We assess it before quoting rather than after, because tiling over a slab that is actively cracking transfers the crack straight into the tile.
Why does outdoor tile crack in Houston?
Two reasons, and neither is the tile. Either there is no uncoupling membrane between the tile and a slab that moves, or the movement joints are missing or placed wrongly. Seasonal clay movement has to have somewhere to go; if the assembly does not give it a joint, it takes a grout line.
What tile can go outdoors in Houston?
Porcelain in a suitable slip rating and thickness, rated for exterior use and for freeze-thaw. Not every indoor tile qualifies, and matching an interior floor straight out through a threshold usually means finding the exterior-rated version of that range rather than using the indoor one.
How long does a tile patio installation take?
Two to four weeks for most projects, longer if a new slab has to be poured and cured first. Curing time is not optional and is built into the schedule you get with the proposal.
